There is low level of knowledge and awareness of cancer, and indeed prostate cancer in Nigeria. This was the submission of Prof Emeka Iweala of the Department of Biochemistry, College of science and technology, Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria.
Prof. Iweala disclosed this at the 26th Inaugural lecture of the University, with the theme: Confronting the ravaging ” crab” for sustainable development; A biochemistry Archetype.
According to Iweala, the loss in human resources due to the plague ( cancer) ,is enormous. ” Cancer is responsible for over 10 million deaths in Africa. And it is expected to rise”.
He took a comparative analysis of men in Nigeria and their counterparts in the United States. According to the Don, ” There is low awareness and knowledge of cancer and especially, prostate cancer among men in Nigeria compared with their counterparts in the United States”.
He decried poor funding and lack of research grants as impediments to research and development towards ameliorating the disease.
