Location and History:
Established in January 2000 by Dame (Dr) Christie Toby, as a way of instilling discipline and eradicating poverty in society, The Archdeacon Brown Education Centre (ABEC), Port Harcourt, has grown from its humble beginning into a group, encompassing six different schools, including a special learning centre for physically-challenged children and a football academy. ABEC is a leader in comprehensive education for the child, building characters and minds that will march proudly and confidently into the future as its environment encourages every child to develop personal/moral self-discipline along with cooperation with others and show respect for self and others.
The school is located in a serene environment devoid of city distractions. Its environment with strikingly beautiful edifices is spacious and conducive for learning.
The philosophy behind the School: ABEC’s main philosophy is hinged on the philosophy of the uniqueness of each child. Hence each student is taught and groomed to tap on his/her unique abilities and talents to be a future leader. As a family-oriented institution, parents are encouraged to be part of their children education and taken as an important part of the school family. The school aims at giving each child strong wings to soar. ABEC also offers merit-based scholarships to deserving students ready to learn and grow in a world-class education centre.
It specifies, “We inculcate in our children basic guiding principles that will help them as they grow and excel through life.”
Type and curriculum: ABEC offers pre-school, primary, secondary, Advanced Level and pre-university education for its students. It runs the Nigerian, British and American curricular.
Extra-Curricular Activities: This is based on the provision of quality education beyond the classroom to the students with lots of extra-curricular activities available to them through participation in its various clubs. The aim is to groom the students for possible careers and leadership. Each child is taught to aim at winning, succeeding and excelling ‘for every victory brings self-confidence, advancement and fame.’ They participate through the various clubs available in the school. These clubs are Nerd ICT Club (Information Communication Technology), ABEC Green Club (Environmental), ABEC Guides (Girls Guides), JETS Club (Science and Technology), Rotary Club, Thespian Club (Educational Theatre), Young Farmers Club(Agricultural practices), and ABEC Press (Media).
Sports in ABEC allows the students the opportunity to actualise their full potentials in various sports with excellent indoor, and outdoor facilities, including a swimming pool, volleyball court, basketball court, handball pitch, lawn tennis court, standard table tennis boards and athletics equipment. ABEC students are active participants in Rivers State in competitions like Loyal milk national swim competition, KSL school league, Super cup, for boys and girls teams with outstanding performance. There is also an ABEC Football Academy.
Staff: ABEC has a dedicated team of competent academic staff poised to deliver quality education. There is continuous training of teachers. The staff members treat go beyond the call of duty and treat each child as their own.
Facilities: The institution is constantly investing in new facilities and technology. The school maintains a small class population, where close attention is paid to the individual needs of each child. There are also well-equipped science laboratories for practical oriented classes, world-class hostels and fully equipped classrooms.
Edge: The school believes that every child, no matter the circumstances of the birth has a right to qualitative education. Hence its low school fees in comparison to its high standard and focus on special education. Each child, at ABEC, is seen as an individual with his/her peculiarities, strengths and passion.
Awards and Achievements: ABEC has an excellent pass rate in external examinations with its students winning major academic, extra-curricular and sporting competitions.
Future Plans : ABEC is setting up a diagnostic centre to cater to the needs of students with hearing difficulty and impaired vision.
