The Kwara State House of Assembly has made significant progress as two executive bills, the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency Amendment Bill 2023 and the Kwara State Education Trust Fund Amendment Bill 2023, have successfully passed their second readings. The debate, led by House Leader Magaji Oba-Abdulkadir, highlighted the importance of these bills in addressing pressing issues in the education sector and improving environmental practices in the state.
The Education Trust Fund Amendment Bill aims to restructure education for optimal performance, ensuring the state can fulfill the fund’s purpose effectively. Lawmaker Halidu Danbaba emphasized the significance of education in eradicating poverty and securing a prosperous future for society.
Concerning the Environmental Protection Agency Amendment Bill, Oba-Abdulkadir expressed concerns about the indiscriminate dumping of industrial and commercial waste in Ilorin metropolis. He proposed increased penalties to discourage such practices and protect the environment.
Other lawmakers supported the amendments, recognizing the need to address educational challenges and promote cleanliness in the state. Rukayat Shittu emphasized the bill’s significance for a healthy state, as cleanliness is closely linked to overall well-being.
The bills have now been referred to the relevant house committees for public hearings before returning to the House. The Education Trust Fund Amendment Bill seeks to enhance trust fund management, streamlining the board of trustees’ membership and staffing for improved efficiency. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency Amendment Bill aims to increase penalties for sanitation offenses, deterring individuals and corporate bodies from engaging in such activities.
