The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is intensifying its surveillance efforts to protect the Federal Capital Territory against the threat of anthrax. Regina Adaulugba, the Director of the Veterinary, Agriculture, and Rural Development Secretariat, emphasized the seriousness of anthrax, an infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis bacteria. While Nigeria has not yet recorded any cases, the FCT Administration is taking proactive measures by establishing surveillance control posts at all city borders to prevent an outbreak.
Adaulugba assured residents that the emergency preparedness department of the epidemiology unit is fully equipped to handle any potential outbreak, with on-the-spot analysis and active/passive surveillance capabilities. In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, and other FCTA departments, the FCTA has launched a sensitization campaign targeting high-risk individuals and groups, including herders, butchers, and other stakeholders.
The campaign aims to raise awareness about anthrax, educate on symptoms and preventive measures, and ensure that high-risk individuals take necessary precautions. Adaulugba advised residents and butchers to avoid buying, selling, or slaughtering sick animals and to report any suspicious symptoms to veterinary clinics or nearby centers. Flyers and handbills with visual illustrations will be produced to aid in identifying symptoms and promoting preventive measures. The FCTA remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of its residents against the threat of anthrax.
