The Atinuke Cancer Foundation is set to host its annual senior secondary school cancer awareness competition, aiming to enhance information and knowledge about the disease.
Scheduled for June 23, 2023, in Lagos, the inter-school/inter-state competition will feature eight schools competing through essay writing under the theme, ‘Knowledge conquers cancer, let’s close the care gap.’
According to a statement released by the organization, the educational competition is specifically designed for senior secondary schools in both rural and urban Nigerian communities. It aims to not only increase adolescents’ understanding of cancer but also foster the inter-generational transmission of this vital knowledge. By equipping students with awareness and insights, the competition strives to contribute to the reduction of mortality rates associated with cancer, leaving a lasting impact as these students grow older.
Mrs. Tinu Lawal, Founder/CEO of the Atinuke Cancer Foundation and a cancer survivor herself, emphasized the significance of knowledge in overcoming the fear and uncertainty that accompanies a cancer diagnosis. She stated, “Knowledge, in this context, means transitioning from the dark days of fear and terror upon receiving a cancer diagnosis to a future of certainty.”
Highlighting the importance of closing the care gap, Lawal explained that it refers to the discrepancy between recommended best practices and the actual care provided. Given that half of the world’s population lacks access to the full range of essential health services in relation to cancer, the competition aims to bridge this gap by empowering students with the knowledge and encouraging them to become advocates for better care.
Mr. Ola Oresanya, a Trustee and Executive Director of the foundation, emphasized the pivotal role of knowledge in cancer care and survivorship. Recognizing that understanding cancer plays a crucial part in providing effective care, Oresanya highlighted the foundation’s commitment to empowering young minds through this competition.
Through this initiative, the Atinuke Cancer Foundation aims to empower the youth, foster awareness, and contribute to the collective efforts in conquering cancer for a brighter and healthier future.
