Health experts sound the alarm, urging the Federal Government to bolster its domestic funding for research in order to tackle the pressing health challenges facing the nation.

In a groundbreaking scientific seminar in Abuja, health luminaries gathered to mark the inauguration of the IHVN Campus at the International Research Centre of Excellence of the Institute of Human Virology in Nigeria. With the theme “Addressing local health challenges through quality research and partnerships,” experts emphasized the critical need for increased funding to drive impactful research initiatives.

Dr. Patrick Dakum, CEO of IHVN, highlighted Nigeria’s intellectual prowess in research but stressed the government’s role in providing financial support. He remarked, “We possess the intellectual capacity in Nigeria, but we need the government to unlock the opportunities, particularly in funding. A mere glance at universities’ research budgets reveals their minimal allocation in naira. For national development, funding research must be a deliberate priority. Neglecting research means neglecting the future.”

Dakum further called upon the private sector to contribute to the health sector, emphasizing the importance of science and data in guiding public health interventions and treatments for infectious and non-communicable diseases.

Addressing the funding gap, Prof. Alash’le Abimiku, Executive Director at the IRCE of the IHVN, emphasized the critical role of government support. “While grants play a significant role, the government must allocate funding to research. This support is vital for strengthening health infrastructure and services, and we must prioritize research funding. By allocating consistent financial resources, young researchers can be assured of long-term support, even if breakthroughs take years to materialize,” she emphasized.

The IRCE of the IHVN remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing local health challenges through rigorous research and fruitful partnerships. The center recognizes the importance of tailoring analysis to the specific needs of local communities while collaborating with healthcare providers, community organizations, government agencies, and international collaborators.

As the urgent call for increased research funding echoes across the nation, the potential for transformative health breakthroughs awaits the fuel of financial support.
