In a remarkable achievement, the University of Ibadan, the University of Nigeria, the University of Lagos, and Ahmadu Bello University have secured prominent positions in global university rankings, as announced by the Centre for World University Rankings. With a total of 20,531 universities evaluated worldwide, these Nigerian institutions have solidified their positions among the best.
Leading the pack, the University of Ibadan claimed the top spot in Nigeria and secured an impressive ranking of 1,163rd globally. The University of Nigeria followed closely, ranking second in Nigeria and securing the 1,784th position worldwide. Meanwhile, the University of Lagos secured the third position in Nigeria and an admirable global ranking of 1,875th. Not to be outdone, Ahmadu Bello University emerged as the fourth-ranked Nigerian institution, securing the 1,881st spot on the global list.
The global rankings, which encompassed 2,000 universities, featured renowned institutions like Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford as the top five universities in the world. The rankings were based on criteria such as research, employability, faculty, and education quality.
Addressing the national landscape, Dr. Nadin Mahassen, the President of the Centre for World University Rankings, emphasized the significance of adequate funding for Nigeria’s higher education system to enhance its competitiveness globally. Dr. Mahassen stressed the importance of attracting top academics and students, expanding teaching capacity alongside increasing enrollment, and ensuring a steady growth in tertiary education expenditure as a percentage of the national GDP.
This achievement highlights the progress made by Nigerian universities on the international stage and underscores the need for sustained investment and support to further enhance their development and global reputation.
