Ekiti State University (EKSU) has suspended academic activities for two weeks following protests by students over the imposition of a 5,000 Naira levy for late registration. The students had barricaded the main gates, blocking human and vehicular movement in and out of the campus. The University’s spokesperson, Bode Olofinmuagun, stated that the decision to shut down the institution was to prevent unrest and ensure the safety of students. The school had earlier announced that late tuition payments would attract a 10,000 Naira penalty, but the fee was later reduced to N5,000. The protesting students accused the university management of unnecessary taxation and expressed their dissatisfaction with the reduction in the penalty fee. EKSU urged parents to ensure their children leave the campus immediately.
