I believe we all agree that reading is the bedrock of civilization.
Now imagine a community of elites, book lovers focused on building an army of readers, to inspire the love of reading.
Our future is threatened by a habit of not reading, no libraries, or under-stocked libraries, building a community of individuals who are committed to personal development by using the instrumentality of books and reading culture to correct social vices and engender change is an ideal initiative.
Getting everyone to pick a book and read, then come together to discuss the books read, creates a lively environment for discussing specifics of books, which can lead to an enriching exchange of knowledge.
So let’s get back to the idea of book clubs;
This is the picture in my head – I’d think of a flux of gurus sitting in a gigantic room filled with books and reading big textbooks for hours before taking a break and then performing other weird and boring activities – I’d imagine that is what a book club probably looked like.
It is not exactly so.
It is more like a group of people who come together to discuss the books they’ve read and to express their opinion about those books for learning and promoting reading culture amongst individuals.
It is good to note that there are various types of book clubs; single title clubs, multi title clubs, online book clubs, broadcast clubs, Author led clubs, library book clubs, and book reading clubs.
They all have a varying pattern of function and book clubs can be held in a Library, At home, At a cafe, At school, outside a garden during a picnic, or online.
Here are some benefits of joining a book club:
- First is the joy of sharing the learning experience with other members of the club as this promotes reading culture amongst individuals.
- To hone or develop your public speaking skills, join a book club today.
- People are encouraged to read as many books as possible within a short period.
- Busy people can forgo the rigor of having to read some books and still build a closer relationship with people with similar interests.
- Book clubs in schools will help foster understanding and meaning of lexicons and the use of grammar or vocabulary amongst wards.
- As a writer, book clubs help me think like an editor and promote active reading and better writing.
