For some time now, Zamfara state and indeed the Northern region has been bedeviled by insecurity of unprecedented proportion. No thanks to the activities of bandits and terrorists that has taken over a large chunk of the region.
According to a public affairs and Data analyst, Rotimi Sankore, a large number of men and women in Zamfara state can not read nor write.
” Roughly 80 per cent people in Zamfara has no secondary school education. This account for why bandits have a huge reservoir of recruits on which they continuously tap from”.
While reviewing the security situation in Nigeria vis-a-viz the travails of education in that region, Sankore said, ” Demography is destiny, except budgetary allocations as well as deliberate policy is made on the part of the government insurgency is going to increase exponentially, if the trend continues”.
Data from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics ( NBS), also revealed that in the North East, 47 per cent of male can not read and write. It is worse in the case of females. This he ( Sankore) attributes to the negative religious and cultural practice prevalent in that region.
