Godwin Obaseki, the incumbent Governor of Edo State on Tuesday said that his administration has plans to hand over some government owned schools to Missions and other private persons that would be interested in developing such schools.
Edo State government gave this hint at the occasion of the 60th Founder’s day anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima College (OLOFOBA), Auchi in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.
Jimoh Ijegbai, the Commissioner for Education, who represented the Governor said that it was part of Obaseki’s administration’s design to revamp the education sector in Edo State.
He said the guidelines for the plan was already being worked out and that the process would commence in the second term of the administration.
“What we are trying to achieve is to see that government effectively concentrate on the left over schools that are not doing well after others must have been taken over by interested persons or groups.
“Some public schools will be handed over to anybody or persons who will be capable of effectively managing them”, he said.
Furthermore, he stated that the Obaseki administration is trying to reopen the educational system, starting with the basic, because of the need to get it right from the foundation. Haven done with this, he said that the administration will begin upgrading next year by introducing the same technology in secondary schools. This, he noted will start with the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS1) and then move to JSS2.
Gov. Obaseki commended members of the OLOFOBA on the institution’s 60th anniversary, even as he challenged them to be part of the effort at developing the college that contributed in shaping their lives.
Mr. Pascal Ugbome, the President of the association, expressed the determination of the body to contribute to the development of the school, bemoaning the infrastructural decay in school’s 60 years of existence.
