Blooming Greens School in Yaba, Lagos State, recognizes the significant impact of spelling bee competitions on learning and comprehension of concepts. According to Mrs. Susan Babatunde-Yamah, the school’s proprietor, hosting this year’s edition of the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition aims to promote literacy among pupils and provide them with valuable learning experiences.
Expressing her delight, Mrs. Babatunde-Yamah shared, “I’m thrilled that our school’s participants have advanced to the national level, and we are eagerly looking forward to the final stage.”
She emphasized the importance of schools giving more attention to literacy and praised the students’ ability to spell challenging words, which many people have never encountered before, as a truly encouraging achievement.
However, she expressed disappointment in the lack of support from the Federal Government in sponsoring the event, calling for more interest and investment in such educational initiatives.
Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the National Coordinator of the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition, highlighted the program’s goal of promoting literacy among Nigerian students and providing rewarding opportunities for learners.
He revealed that the competition attracted over 500 participants from various schools in Lagos, and four qualifiers will be chosen at the national level to represent Lagos State.
The final competition, scheduled to take place from July 26th to 29th at Deeper Life High School in Port Harcourt, promises exciting prospects. The senior category winner will receive a N1 million scholarship, while the junior category winner will be awarded a N500,000 scholarship.
During the event, Afunku Burhanudeen from Alfallah Beneficient Foundation College, Idimu; Sheidu Abdulhafeez from Abibatu Magaji Senior High School, Agege; Precious Munachi from Blooming Greens School, Yaba; and Mamman Jamaldeen from Airforce Secondary School, Shasha, all qualified for the national level, showcasing their exceptional spelling skills and determination.
By leveraging the power of spelling bee competitions, Blooming Greens School and the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition aim to enhance learning, nurture literacy, and open doors of opportunity for talented students across the nation.
