The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the provision of basic amenities across the country, according to Emmanuel Osodeke, the national president of ASUU.
Mr Osodeke made the call during an interview in Ota, Ogun State, in response to President Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech on June 12, where he emphasized his government’s commitment to investing heavily in education, infrastructure, and transportation.
The ASUU president highlighted that Nigeria has not fared well since the advent of democracy, attributing it to the lack of essential services that would benefit ordinary Nigerians. He stressed the need to change this trajectory and focus on initiatives that would improve the lives of everyday citizens.
Key priorities outlined by Mr Osodeke included stable electricity, well-maintained roads, functional refineries, a robust rail system, and adequate funding for education. He emphasized that these essential services would not only enhance the quality of life for Nigerians but also position the country competitively on a global scale.
The ASUU president expressed the desire for Nigeria to become an attractive destination for skilled professionals from around the world, rather than witnessing a continuous brain drain of Nigerian talent seeking opportunities abroad.
Mr Osodeke concluded by stating that Nigerians eagerly await the implementation of the promises made by President Tinubu during his Democracy Day speech, particularly in terms of providing the necessary resources and support to ensure a well-functioning educational system and improved living conditions for all Nigerians.
