Six talented student-athletes from the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) have secured their qualifications for the highly anticipated FISU World University Games, set to take place in China from July 28 to August 8. Their remarkable achievements were revealed by Prof. Tajudeen Ibraheem, the university’s Director of Sport, in a memo addressed to Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the Vice Chancellor.
The six athletes, out of the 12 who participated in the trials held at the University of Benin from May 8 to May 14, have showcased their exceptional skills and dedication to earn their spots in the prestigious competition. Prof. Ibraheem expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor and the entire management team for their unwavering support throughout the trial competition in Benin City.
The qualified student-athletes representing Unilorin are Musa Nurain, Latoya Alabi, Ruqayyah Mustapha, Fareedah Aderibigbe, Usman Afolabi, and Sofiat Obanishola. Nurain, an impressive sprinter from the Department of Educational Technology, secured two gold medals in the 100m and 200m races, displaying his electrifying speed and unwavering determination.
Joining Nurain in the field events are Alabi and Mustapha, both from the Department of Human Kinetics Education, who excelled in the javelin throw and discus throw, earning well-deserved gold medals. Aderibigbe, known for her martial arts prowess in taekwondo, emerged victorious in the mat event (Batan 53KG) and has already made historical feats in the sport during the Nigeria University Games (NUGA).
In the domain of racquet sports, Afolabi from the Department of Human Kinetics Education displayed lightning reflexes and exceptional hand-eye coordination, securing his qualification in badminton’s male category. On the other hand, Obanishola, also from the Department of Human Kinetics Education, showcased finesse and strategic prowess in the female category of badminton, emerging victorious in all her games.
The FISU World University Games, widely recognized as the pinnacle of university-level sports competitions, will gather thousands of student-athletes from across the globe to showcase their skills and represent their educational institutions. Held every two years, this event provides a platform for young athletes to display their abilities and potentially launch their careers in their chosen sports. Unilorin’s student-athletes are poised to leave a lasting impression on the international stage, challenging the world’s best university players and making their university proud.
