Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reaffirmed his dedication to equipping children and youth with the necessary skills for a self-sufficient future. The governor restated this commitment during the 2023 Children’s Day Celebration held at Police College Ground in Ikeja, Lagos, under the theme “More Money for Primary Education.”
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of providing children with suitable pathways based on their skills and competencies. He expressed the government’s ongoing collaboration with the private sector and stakeholders to empower children and youth in the state, offering them the wings to fly, a nurturing environment, and the skills needed for a prosperous tomorrow. The governor stressed the government’s determination to ensure that no child is left behind.
Highlighting the significance of the event’s theme, Governor Sanwo-Olu called upon leaders to allocate more resources to primary education. He acknowledged the government’s commitment to the protection and welfare of children, citing initiatives and intervention programs implemented since 2019. Over the past four years, the state government has allocated over N4.2 billion to fully cover the West African Senior School Certificate Examination fees, ensuring that students progress smoothly through their secondary school education.
Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged to continue raising awareness about crucial issues that impact children’s happiness and development. Recognizing the pivotal role of early childhood education, the government has commissioned numerous projects across primary and secondary schools, including construction, renovation, and rehabilitation efforts. Additionally, the “Project Zero Program” has successfully reduced the number of out-of-school children, reintegrating 11,957 pupils into the education system with full support.
Mr. Abolaji Abayomi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, commended the administration for its genuine interest and commitment to the welfare and comfort of every child in Lagos State. Under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, the education sector has witnessed remarkable progress, characterized by improved funding, infrastructure, conducive learning environments, quality teaching, and a rewarding system.
