Unlocking Nigeria’s Blue Economy: NIMASA Advocates for Growth Opportunities
According to the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, Nigeria’s vast under-utilized blue economy offers tremendous opportunities for growth and development, which could help the country overcome its present economic challenges. Speaking at The Bullion Lecture organized by the Centre for Financial Journalism, Jamoh expressed his concerns over the failure of Nigeria’s successive governments to explore the vast resources that the blue economy offers, and how it could be used to reduce the country’s huge debt profile. He stressed that the blue economy could help Nigeria to diversify its economy and enhance transportation, job creation, and sustainability of the environment. With Nigeria’s long coastline, Jamoh urged the need for appropriate policy interventions anchored on good governance, and strategic and coordinated approaches to unlock the potential of the blue economy, taking into account the unique needs and challenges of coastal communities.
