According to the latest report by the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) of Tanzania, over 42,000 schoolgirls dropped out of school due to pregnancy between July 2021 and June 2022. Shockingly, this number includes girls from both primary and secondary schools, with 23,009 of the impregnated students being secondary school girls. The report also reveals that the problem is widespread, affecting 19 local government authorities. With education being a vital tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, this alarming trend threatens to undermine the progress made toward gender equality in Tanzania.
