The Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP) has opposed a proposed bill by the House of Representatives that mandates doctors to undertake five years of compulsory service in Nigeria before obtaining a license. ANPMP’s national president, Kayode Adesola, has stated that the proposed bill is not based on in-depth research on the factors driving the brain drain crisis in the country’s health sector. He added that the health sector required more funding and that insecurity was also affecting the ability of medical practitioners to deliver services. Instead of mandatory service, Mr. Adesola suggested declaring a national emergency in the health sector to proffer sustainable solutions to the attrition of health workers, improve healthcare facilities, and reduce the disease burden.
