Recently, a student of Dowen College, Lagos, Sylvester Omoroni, who was allegedly bullied to death caused fear and panic amongst pupils and parents, especially those who have wards in boarding houses.
The circumstances that led to the boy’s death is laced with intrigues as many questioned the tragedy.
Speaking on an early morning radio show (Nigeria Info 99.3 FM), public affairs analyst, Jimi Disu expressed dismay at the level of moral decadence in junior schools across the country. He interrogated the motive behind the establishment of most high-brow schools, especially those will boarding facilities where the children are left in the lurch by materialistic parents.
‘Now we have a new set of elites who have little or no time for the moral up bringing of their children and wards. They just dump the children in the school, pay the fees, sometimes running into millions of naira and leave the rest to the school management, who are in the main, driven by profiteering motive. The children call their housemaster by the first name. They give their housemaster their ATM card to withdraw money for them”.
Again, he questioned the integrity of those running the schools.
” Who are those running the schools? What is their motive? Are they Tai Solarin or Adeola Odutola”. This is alluding to foremost educationists, who were intellectual and moral exemplar to the society.
