A youth, Sunday Adedeji, who is awaiting University admission said, he lost appetite for a whole day because the team he passionately support and which he had tipped to win a particular match, unfortunately lost. The import of that loss is that his betting tickets was ruined for the day.

According to him ” My tickets for that day was ‘ cut’ by that singular marginal error. So I have been down emotionally. I put in N1,500, thinking that I will hit big cash, I just hope things will be better next time” . The dreadlocked lad consoled himself.

Such is the psychological trauma that the betting game inflict on hundreds of thousands youths across Nigeria.

It is now a common sight to see youths throng betting centres which inundates street corners and even marketplace, where they interact and discuss animatedly on possible winning bets and the prospect of winning big. They see it as a way of earning money without stress.

However, this seemingly lucrative game has become a dangerous pastime for a number of students in schools and colleges across the country.

Live betting is extensively featured, with up to the minutes odds available for on- going events with soccer being heavily featured. Investigation by The Educational Tide revealed that youths who engage in this betting game borrow as much as N5,000.00 or as low as N500.00 for their daily stake.

In extreme case, students dispense with their school fees, feeding allowance or their pocket money in order to meet up with their permutations for the day. High school students and undergrads form a large percentage of the pool. Some of them win, while some ( in the majority) lose. As a two- way thing, where the prediction comes through and the individual who wagers his money wins, the company will have to pay. Conversely, if he looses, the bet company smiles.

It is the biggest online wagering site from Nigeria, which is about now the biggest economy in West Africa.

As the biggest operators, they can also offer the biggest prizes with up to 20 million Naira in winning possible.

The sport betting section is laid out to be easy to use for those who have never wagered online before, while featuring a hugely diverse range of games and possible bet configuration suitable for highly experienced punters as well.

Soccer from around the world is carried with all the leagues from England, Germany, Spain, Italy etc. Other sports include, Tennis, Baseball, Rugby, Motorsports, Cricket and Basketball among others with bet options like Double Chances, Multiples, Over/Under Odds, Handicap and so on.

Today, the list of sport betting companies in Nigeria can not be counted on the finger tips. They come in different platforms and operational style. Thus, Naijabet, Nairabet, Betway, Bet9ja, Sportybet, Lionbet, Merrybet, Surebet247, Betfarm, Betland, 1960bet, Betking , 9japredict, Lovingbet etc.

Although, sport betting may have reduced crime rates in the society, experts are of the opinion that there are a lot of risk involved in sport betting as far as students are concerned.

An educationist and school proprietor, Mr. Oyediran, opined that the more money a student gets, the more money he or she wants to stake.

” For the boys, since it has become a habit, it does not go easily. The student can go as far as stealing or selling properties that does not belong to him so as to meet up with the day’s stake”.

” The condition is even worse for the girls, who may even go into horrible absurdities including sexual peccadillo in order to make big winnings”. He concluded.
