Faced with poor facilities and correspondingly poor academic standards when he assumed office as Rector about four years ago, capital projects was what Commodore Duja Emmanuel Effedua (Rtd) concentrated on to change the story of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), located in Oron, Akwa Ibom State.
Facilities were in ramshackle and where available, basic teaching and learning tools were below international standards. The story of Oron was so dismal and alarming the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) came to the verge of shutting it down.
Apparently seeing his appointment to Oron as a rescue mission, Commodore Effedua practically hit the ground running. He began to revamp and rebuild, initiating new projects that accurately captured the vision statement of an academy established in 1977 as the Nautical College of Nigeria by the Federal government of Nigeria with assistance from the International Maritime Organisation.
In his mission for educational and structural transformation of Oron into a world-class training institution, Commodore Effedua has recorded a long list of capital projects that includes the construction of:
