The government of Ekiti State has announced the immediate revocation of sixteen contracts on construction and renovation projects under the state’s 2015 and 2017 UBEC / SUBEB Intervention Project.
Prof. Femi Akinwunmi, the Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Ekiti State made this known to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti.
Mr. Tope Babalola, the Director, Social Mobilisation and Communication, SUBEB, on behalf of the SUBEB Chairman explained via a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti, that the contracts were terminated due to a breach of contract terms.
Akinwunmi reiterated that many of the revoked contracts had been dragging since March 2020, which contravenes the time frame of the contractual agreement that stipulated a maximum of twelve weeks for renovation works untandarubsder intervention projects in the state.
Hence, he ordered the contractor handling the renovation of a block of six classrooms at AUD Pilot Nursery and Primary school, in Ado-Ekiti to immediately remove the substandard roofing materials used in the school.
“The contractor was asked to replace them without delay, as specified in the terms of the agreement and/or have the contract terminated”, he said.
The Executive Chairman of SUBEB gave the directive after an on the spot assessment of ongoing projects in the state.
Akinwunmi who was not satisfied with what he met on ground, stated that the board discovered that the contractors had used 0.45mm gauge roofing sheets instead of 0.55mm as stipulated in the UBEC / SUBEB agreement.
Moreover, he declared that the SUBEB recently procured Vernier Slide Calipers for Technical Officers in the sixteen Local Government Education Authorities of Ekiti State, as part of concerted efforts to enforce standards as well as ensure that only appropriate roofing sheets were used in the board’s projects in the state.
