Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the incumbent Governor of Kano State has disclosed the plans of his government to construct about five thousand housing units for teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state, under the state’s first phase of a scheme aimed at providing decent accommodation for teachers and their families in Kano state.
The scheme tagged ‘Teachers Reserved Areas (TRA), will be implemented by the state government in partnership with the Family Homes Fund and Federal Mortgage Bank. This was disclosed by the State Governor at a stakeholders meeting on Sturday, December 12, at the Kano State Government House.
“Each of the thirty-six Local Governments will have hundred housing units, while the remaining eight metropolitan Local Governments will have hundred and fifty housing units each.
“The government would provide the land, auxiliary facilities such as water, electricity and roads while other aspects would be handled by the partners”, Ganduje stated.
Dr. Ganduje went on to state that participation in the scheme would be optional and beneficiaries would have to pay for the houses in a less stress installment arrangement. Besides, he disclosed that the scheme is billed to commence in 2021.
“My administration is concerned about ensuring affordability of and access to houses for teachers so that they do not become destitute when they retire from active service”, he said.
Rabi’u Sulaiman Bichi, the Executive Chairman, Kano State Policy Coordinator and Policy Implementation Directorate, was appointed to head the technical committee set up by the state government to fashion out modalities for smooth implementation of the project.
Bichi, in his speech affirmed that the teachers housing initiative was to complement the state free and compulsory education policy.
