The Lagos State Agency for Mass Education has announced plans to regulate tutorial centres in the state to ensure best practices.
Mrs Oluwakemi Kalesanwo, Director of the agency, while speaking at training for census enumerators and coordinators, said the census would enable the government to know the number of tutorial centres in the state.
Two hundred and forty-five facilitators were trained to work in the 245 wards in Lagos state at the three-day training.
“We need to know how many Continue Education Centers/ Tutorial Centers we have in Lagos State. If we say we’re moderating these centers and we don’t know the exact numbers, how will we be able to plan for the people who attend these centres?
“The census will enable the government to moderate and also plan for the future. We will have adequate data on them and also plan for the future of education. This will enable us to plan adequately such that we are able to know the numbers of centres we have.
“From whatever we gather, we will know if we need to increase the number of secondary schools. If we don’t have adequate data on this non-formal education, it is going to be difficult for the government to make any plan; it is only the Agency for Mass Education in Lagos State that has the authority to approve and moderate the activities of the tutorial centres.”
Kalesanwo said that tutorial centres in the state were expected to obey the government policies on the operation of the centres.
