The 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) begins today, Monday August 17, 2020 with the Mathematics 2 (Essay) paper which starts at 9.00am Nigerian time. The examination, conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will ends on Saturday September 12, 2020 with the Office Practice 1(Objective) paper which starts at 4.00pm Nigerian time.
About 1,549,463 candidates, comprising 786,421 males and 763,402 females are to sit for the examinations in 19,129 centres nationwide.
Patrick Areghan, Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO) of WAEC, said the council would adhere strictly to physical distancing in the examination halls by ensuring that candidates sit two metres apart.
The exit examination for the Senior Secondary School education, which was initially scheduled to begin in April this year, was postponed indefinitely as a result of the closure of schools caused by the rampaging Covid-19 pandemic.
The examination was later fixed for August after an appreciable effort was made in the containment of the virus and the growing agitations in some circles for the reopening of schools.
The schools were reopened from August 4 across the states with the various state governments and Federal Government adopting different strategies and policies to ensure safety and protection of students, teachers and others involved in the conduct of the examination.
WAEC called on supervisors, invigilators and students to shun malpractices and observe the coronavirus guidelines.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) commended the Federal Government for providing the PPE.
However, Dr Mike Ike-Ene, the Secretary-General of the union, noticed that the governments’ concentration was more for the exit students and environments and called on teachers to take personal responsibility where government failed.
