Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Special Offences Court, has fixed August 17, 2020, for judgment in the rape suit filed against John Otema, an alumnus of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The judgment date was fixed after the parties adopted their final written addresses.
Otema, who is facing three counts bordering on rape and assault occasioning harm, contrary to sections 173 and 260 (1) (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, was accused of raping two students of UNILAG.
Otema was alleged to have on January 17, 2018, had unlawful sexual intercourse with student ‘X’ around the Distance Learning Institute, UNILAG, and also physically assaulted her by hitting her several times in the face, strangling her and biting her back, and also had sexual intercourse with student ‘Y’ without her consent on January 31, 2018, at his home at No. 6 Ajileye Street, Bariga area of Lagos.
At the resumed proceedings on Monday, the defence counsel, Fred Onyeka, had in his final written address dated December 5, 2019, urged the court to discharge and acquit the defendant of the three counts against him, while the prosecutor, Arinola Momoh-Ayokanbi, in a written address dated February 6, 2020, urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant based on the strength of the evidence against him.
Ruling on the final addresses, Justice Soladoye fixed August 17, 2020, for judgment.
